Can you advertise inside ChatGPT from South Africa?

Ads are arriving in ChatGPT, Google’s AI answers and Copilot. Here is what is actually available to South African businesses right now, what is coming, and how to get a head start.

For the first time, you can pay to appear inside an AI’s answer — not next to it. The question for a South African business is simpler: which of these are actually open to you today?

01

Advertising moved inside the answer

Search advertising used to mean a labelled result at the top of a Google page. AI advertising is different: the ad appears inside a conversational answer, as one of a handful of recommendations the model hands back. When someone asks an AI assistant what to buy or who to hire, the sponsored option sits right there in the reply.

This changed fast in 2026. OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT, Google started placing ads inside its AI answers, and Microsoft built ads into Copilot. For a business, the opportunity is obvious — and the first question is always the same: can I actually do this from South Africa?

02

What is actually available in South Africa

Here is the honest state of play in 2026. Two of these routes are effectively open to South African advertisers today, one is coming, and one has closed.

ChatGPT AdsNot in SA yet

OpenAI launched ads in early 2026 in the US, then Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK, with Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea next. South Africa is not on the list yet. Worth preparing for, not buying today.

Google AI Overviews & AI ModeReaching SA

Google’s AI answers already appear on a large share of South African searches. Ads inside them are served through Performance Max and AI Max — the same Google Ads campaigns local businesses already run — so this is the closest thing to a live route.

Microsoft CopilotAvailable now

Microsoft Advertising works in South Africa, and Copilot shows those ads inline and in the sidebar of its answers. If you already run Microsoft (Bing) Ads, you may be appearing in AI answers without knowing it.

PerplexityPulled ads

Perplexity tested sponsored questions in 2024 but has since abandoned advertising, citing user trust. Not a channel to plan around for now.

03

How AI ads actually work

Across the platforms that have launched, the pattern is consistent. Ads are contextual, matched to the topic of the conversation rather than a single typed keyword. They are clearly labelled as sponsored and usually sit within or just below the answer. And crucially, the platforms insist the ads do not change the answer itself — they sit alongside the recommendation.

The pricing is familiar to anyone who runs paid media: cost-per-click and cost-per-impression bidding through a self-serve manager. What is new is the behaviour around them. A large majority of AI-answer sessions now end without a click to any website at all — the answer resolves the question in place. That makes being named in the answer valuable in its own right, whether or not the user clicks through.

The old game was winning the click. The new game is being the recommendation — the brand the AI actually names when your customer asks.

What South African businesses can do right now

You do not have to wait for ChatGPT ads to reach South Africa to start. The routes that are already open share the same foundations — and getting them right now is what positions you for everything that follows.

1

Test Microsoft (Bing) Ads

It is available in South Africa today and feeds Copilot’s answers. For many businesses it is the cheapest, lowest-risk way to see what paid placement inside an AI assistant actually does for you.

2

Get Performance Max & AI Max right on Google

These are the campaign types Google uses to place ads inside its AI answers. Setting them up well now means you are already in the pipe as AI-answer ads expand to more South African searches.

3

Clean up your product and business data

AI ads lean heavily on structured feeds — Merchant Center products, accurate business details, clear descriptions. Messy data is the most common reason a business gets left out of an AI recommendation.

4

Build organic AI visibility alongside it

Paid placement and being cited organically reinforce each other. The same clarity that wins a citation helps your ads qualify — start with our guide to ranking on ChatGPT and AI search.

5

Prepare for ChatGPT ads before they land

When OpenAI opens South Africa, contextual, well-structured creative and a clear offer will matter more than budget. Businesses that have the groundwork done will move first.

Where Silience stands

We are researching this closely — honestly

AI advertising is not a formal service we sell yet. It is new, it is moving weekly, and we would rather understand it properly than rush a package to market. What we do run every day is the paid media these AI ads flow through — Google Performance Max and AI Max, and Microsoft Ads.

So if you want to test the routes that are already open to South African businesses, or simply understand what is coming, that is a conversation we are ready to have — with real data, not hype.
