How to Choose an SEO Agency in South Africa Now That Google Has AI Overviews

AI Overviews are already answering a growing share of searches before anyone clicks a blue link. Here’s what that changes about hiring an SEO agency in 2026.

Quick answer

Google’s AI Overviews now generate a written answer for a large share of searches before a single organic result is shown. If you’re hiring or re-evaluating an SEO agency in South Africa right now, the most important new question isn’t “can you rank us on page one” — it’s “how do you get us cited inside the answer itself.” Below: what actually changed, and the exact questions worth asking any agency pitching you.

If you searched for anything about SEO agencies in South Africa this year, there’s a decent chance Google answered part of your question before you even reached a website — a boxed-out summary sitting above the usual results, built by AI, pulling from a handful of sources it trusts enough to cite.

That’s an AI Overview. It’s already reshaping search behaviour in South Africa, and it changes what “good SEO” needs to mean for your business. It also changes what you should be asking any agency that wants your budget.

What Actually Changed Between “SEO” and “GEO”

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) — sometimes called Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) — isn’t a replacement for SEO. It’s a layer on top of it. Your content still has to earn a strong organic position. But it also needs to be structured clearly enough that an AI system can lift an accurate answer straight out of it and choose to cite you as the source.

According to Semrush data (pulled July 2026), searches directly about this shift are already real and growing: globally, “ai search optimization” is searched around 3,600 times a month, “geo vs seo” around 2,900 times a month, and “how to optimize for ai overviews” around 390 times a month — all with relatively low competition, because most agencies (including plenty in South Africa) haven’t caught up yet.

  Classic SEO GEO / AEO
Goal Rank in the top organic positions Get cited or summarised inside the AI-generated answer
Success looks like Position 1–3, strong click-through rate Your business/brand named in the Overview, even without a click
What matters most Backlinks, on-page optimisation, technical health Clear, direct answers; structured data; original data and expertise

“We searched ‘how do I choose an SEO agency’ ourselves on 24 July 2026. Google answered with a full AI Overview before a single organic result appeared — citing sources like OuterBox directly inside the summary. AI Overviews reward whoever writes the clearest answer, not just whoever ranks first.”

How to Vet an SEO Agency in South Africa in 2026

Six questions worth asking before you sign anything — and what a strong answer sounds like.

1. How do you think about AI Overviews and AI Mode in your strategy?

Listen for something specific — structured data, schema markup, answer-first content — not a blank stare or a generic “we keep up with trends.”

2. Can I see real Search Console or Semrush data for a client you currently manage?

A credible agency should be comfortable showing real numbers, not just logos and testimonials.

3. What do month 1, month 3 and month 6 actually look like?

You should get a concrete roadmap of deliverables, not a vague promise of “top rankings.”

4. Who reviews my account each month, and how often do we actually meet?

This reveals whether you get a dedicated specialist who knows your business, or a junior account manager reading from a template.

5. What happens if a keyword doesn’t move? What's the next lever you pull?

Tests whether they have a genuine plan B beyond “we’ll write more content and see.”

6. Is technical SEO and dev work handled in-house or outsourced?

Coordination between SEO strategy and actual website fixes is often exactly where campaigns stall.

Three Red Flags to Watch For

🚩 Backlinks-only pitch

If the entire strategy is buying links, that’s 2015 SEO, not 2026 SEO.

🚩 No mention of schema or structured data

If an agency never brings up structured data, they’re not thinking about how AI systems read your site.

🚩 Vague reporting

“We’re ranking well” without screenshots, dashboards, or real query data isn’t a report — it’s a guess dressed up as one.

The Bottom Line

AI Overviews haven’t made SEO optional — if anything, they’ve raised the bar. The agencies that will keep South African businesses visible over the next few years are the ones treating classic SEO and GEO/AEO as one connected job, and who are transparent about real client results rather than vague promises.
